some final thoughts
First of all, if you are even thinking of trying this exercise with your students, do it. Don't worry if you are not familiar with the English sound system. You didn't need a linguistics class to teach you how to talk, did you? No! You worked that out all by yourself before your first day at Little Angels Kindergarten.
You should approach the task with the same attitude of your own good students: I have no idea what she's talking about, but I might learn something interesting. OK, what do we do first?
The whole sequence is a seat-of-the-pants science project that happens to be conducted in an English classroom (or afterschool program, or reading class, or even a math class). There is no right way to do it. You and the students are genuinely interested in what you will learn from the experiment. Results will vary--widely--from class to class.
