A literal translation of this Latin word is ‘body.’ When we talk about corpora in these pages, we are referring to a specific “body” of language. There is a whole sub-discipline called corpus linguistics, whose data consists of large bodies of words recorded in speech or writing.
Next time you are feeling brave, visit one of the many corpora online. There’s an excellent one from the University of Michigan (MICASE) that’s free and open to anyone. It takes a little time to figure out how to get what you want, but stay with it. You can get things no dictionary can ever offer you. For example, you could get a list of every use of the word up in the corpus. This would help someone distinguish the prepositional use of up (up a side street) from the phrasal verb use of up (to follow up). Or, you could generate a list of the 100 most frequently used words in the conversations of American college students. Like, seriously? Dude!
